One Little Slip - NE LB 958

“It was a cup of good intentions, a tablespoon of one big mess, a dash of overreaction, and I assume you know the rest!

One little slip… one little slip. It was a fusion of confusion with a few confounding things.” - BareNakedLadies

Nebraska LB 958, proposed by 6 like-minded state Senators, calls for several new measures on gun ownership. Here are some of the highlights:

*Requires trigger locks on all guns sold.
*Requires gun owners to report guns stolen to the local police, or face Class IV Misdemeanor charges.
*Creates the Gun Violence Commission
*Initiates a Public Awareness program by the Nebraska State Patrol
*Gun owners are now required to submit a form to the Chief of Police or the County Sheriff before purchasing, leasing, renting, or transferring a gun (a $5 fee and a form is required).

In light of the recent Omaha Westroads Mall mass murder, there’s still a tendency in most American communities to lay blame with someone other than the actual perpetrator. One of the injured from that day was quoted on a local news station blaming the gun owner (not the shooter) for the shooting. Read it here. The Omaha shooting was a terrible tragedy, but if you want to play hypotheticals, we can do that all day. “What if the gun owner had reported his gun stolen?” is a fair hypothetical. How about this one: “What if that nutjob was put in a mental institution after the 5th or 6th time he threatened to murder someone?” Or this: “What if there were more armed civilians in the mall that day?” Or, “What if his parents broke off a few more switches in his youth?” The danger with this approach is that in the clear 20/20 vision of hindsight, government officials see a clear path to enforcing more control over our lives. The slippery slope starts with the best of intentions, “for our own good.”

LB 958 is seemingly innocuous, but consider where it can lead. “Sure,” the government says, “we’re just making a new commission and requiring gun locks, no harm to the 2nd Amendment!” Later it will be, “Well, the 2nd Amendment only applies to the police and military, so all handguns must be turned in. Rifles for hunting are o.k. (for now).” In another decade or so, hunting will be outlawed along with smoking and beer “for our own good.” If the liberal establishment can just get a generation of kids old enough to be the majority of voters without having any expectation of freedom or independence, they’ll have their Utopian (read Communist) society.

What we need in Nebraska is a stronger police force; put more cops on the streets. Stronger sentences for gun crimes, and an effective gang violence unit. Government doesn’t need to get involved in everyone’s lives; it just needs to do the few jobs that it does have more effectively.

Obama Credits HIMSELF not the Troop Surge!

Senator Obama (D-IL) was questioned tonight at the first New Hampshire Debate before the upcoming primary as to what his thoughts were about the obvious successes of the troop surge.  After stating that he was opposed to the Iraq war in the beginning and opposed to the troop surge although admitting that an additional 30,000 troops would have a dampening effect on the violence, Obama said this:

“I would point out that much of that violence has been reduced because there was an agreement with tribes in Anbar province — Sunni tribes — who started to see, after the Democrats were elected in 2006, you know what, the Americans may be leaving soon, and we are going to be left very vulnerable to the Shi’as. We should start negotiating now. That’s how you change behavior.”  — Sen. Obama

Senator, we started to see a reduction in violence in the Anbar province when we started to capture and kill most of the terrorists hiding out in the outlaying regions!  Chalk one up for the US Military, General P., and President Bush.  Nice try though.  What kind of twisted logic does it take to actually believe that the enemy will appreciate Democrat victories in the polls so much that they’ll quell their violent ways?

The Tragedy in Omaha Speaks Volumes

The following is what is found on my own website (www.baldeaglereport.com).  Feel free to check it out, make comments, or even opine on  www.talk.baldeaglereport.com

--The Bald Eagle
------------

By now news reports are flowing in nationally and even internationally about the latest round of murders to strike the nation. This afternoon at Westroads Shopping Mall, a 19 year old (I won't mention his name b/c he wanted the glory of news coverage) apparently went up to the 3rd floor of a Von Maur department store and began shooting at victims. He hit 14, and killed 8 before turning the gun on himself. The critically wounded are still in surgery or their status is not yet reported on.

In a time when many Americans are concerned with the possibility of terrorism during the Christmas season, suicide attacks, suitcase nuclear bombs, plane hijackings, bombings and the like, we're reminded of how fragile life is. It can all be over at a moments notice.

For me, this day started out by hearing some bad news that a friend of the family lost a newborn baby, only 25 days old, after numerous complications since his birth. It's hard to see the justification in watching the innocent suffer, but we hope beyond all hope that it is for a higher purpose that we're put on the earth. Still, even the most ardent religiously faithful will struggle with these types of tragedies.
By this afternoon, I was alerted of the news that a gunman had murdered several people here in a mall that my family and I frequent. It's a nice mall, in a good area, in what is known for being a family-friendly region of the nation. It was soon clear that a troubled young man acted alone. He resided about 2 miles from my own home here in Bellevue, Nebraska, which is a very good community by all accounts. Although not a native of Nebraska, I've come to appreciate what this state, and this region in general, has to offer. As we hear the stories of the victims who were out getting Christmas outfits, doing some lunchtime gift shopping, or just getting out a little before the snowstorm was to hit, we can't help but feel connected in some way to each of their stories. "I was thinking about going that very mall," or "I was just there a week ago, it could have been then," we'll say. As we hear more and more about the innocent victims, the following will begin to sink in: we are only here for a limited time, a time that seems to accelerate with age, and it is important to make the best of it.

Some may question why God would allow such things to happen. I know I do. Sometimes the answers we get from religious people are genuine, while at other times words seem like an empty vessel meant to defend someone's own beliefs. After much consideration, I've come to the following conclusions:

1) God is real.

2) He gave us free will, and he doesn't interfere with that, ever.

Bad things happen for a reason, but we may never, in our earthly lifetimes, figure out what each reason is. However, I don't think that God has left us here on earth to perish by our own sinful tendencies. He influences those of us who are willing to listen to do good things, just as we are influenced to do bad things. When someone is about to go on a shooting rampage, he doesn't simply zap the person with a bolt of lightning. He doesn't pluck an abandoned baby out of a dumpster and place him gently into the homes of caring parents. He won't just make a disease disappear from a loved one. As much as we'd like direct protection sometimes, He doesn't make us mindless drones to follow His will.

It's apparent to me that He uses inspiration to motivate us to action. The brave police officer who is willing to go into the line of fire to help victims, the foster parents who care for the abandoned child, and the doctor who is motivated beyond normal human capacity to develop a cure are all the result of bad things that happen.

Hopefully people will begin to realize that we should always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Whether or not it would have mattered in this case, I'd like to think that Nebraskans are open to the idea of having concealed to carry permits more readily available for law abiding citizens. We, here on earth, are the ones who must do what is necessary to protect our civilization, and taking ownership of our own communities is one way to do that. Asking the police to prevent crime is foolish at best and more accurately called negligent.

A caller to the local talk radio show KFAB 1110 AM stated that he was saddened by the events of today, but he also doesn't live in fear because he does, in fact, carry a legally concealed weapon with him when shopping or going around town. The radio host, Tom Becka, rather than say anything constructive chose to call the man paranoid. Tom, in a snottingly arrogant manner, inquired as to whether or not the caller had ever had to actually use his weapon as if failing to have used the weapon in self-defense is proof of the caller's paranoia. What type of lunacy does one suffer from to make such an idiotic statement on today of all days? Is Tom's contention that these types of things don't happen? Or if they do, that we should just let them happen all around us?

It is left up to us to do our part to ensure the continued existence of a civilized society. Arming ourselves against all threats isn't a bad option. With a wide open border, the constant threat of terrorism looming over, and crazy nutjobs coming from even the best communities in America, there's no way to guess when bad things are going to happen. All we can do is react accordingly to the situation at hand.

If you're reading this, God wants you to be an agent of change for good in your own way. I don't know if it means that you will take the suicidal tendencies that you might overhear seriously and report it to avert a serious tragedy, or whether you'll find some other way to make the world a little better. We are God's tools to build a better society here on earth while we live in anticipation of what is next.

The key to knowing how to engage in this calling to make things better is to trust your little voice, gut, instinct, conscience, or whatever you want to call it. Sometimes people get the idea that you shouldn't listen to that voice, or do what is right. We rationalize why we can't get something done that needs to be done, or why we prioritize material items over personal connections. Those who are influenced by a more dastardly force are masters are twisting logic and rhetoric, but it only sounds like a good argument if you want it to.

Trust God to lead you in the right direction. That doesn't mean trust everyone who claims to be an agent or follower of the Lord, but trust the Lord.

Liberalism = Fascism

One of the liberal establishment’s favorite names to call the President or Republicans in general is “fascist.” They hold their idiotic signs with a picture of Bush and a swastika, or a phrase like “Neocon = Fascist.” It’s fairly transparent and overly simplistic, but no one really expects anything less from left-wingers. The question, however, becomes: If Bush is so fascist, why aren’t liberals voting for him and his policies?

Fascism is the ultimate form of statism. Simply put, fascism occurs when a dictator uses some means to control the public and do things “for the good of the state.” A simple-minded left-winger will find that some fascist dictators will use “nationalism” or “national pride” as a call to arms for his purposes, and immediately they associate that with a Conservative agenda. Not so. America has a long history of anti-statist behavior, going back to the founding fathers. Our nation rejects the idea of the supremacy of the state over the individual. We developed a Republican form of government (yes, we’re a Republic, not a Democracy, get it right libs) to protect all of us from a mob-rule mentality, fueled by the latest news blurbs or graphic images of the day. We also founded our Constitution on the simple fact that we’re divine creatures with rights that cannot be taken away. Rights are not “granted” to us BY the government in the Constitution, but rather the Constitution declares that government shall not take away rights we are born with because we are made by God. (Check it out). Simply put, anti-statism is not a radical or liberal idea. It’s an age-old Conservative one.

Don’t just take my word for it. Fascist dictators from days long gone would garner a fairly decent portion of liberal support in the 2008 Democratic Primaries if they could run today!

“Comrades! We must abolish the cult of the individual decisively, once and for all.” – Nikita Khrushchev

“We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society.” – Hillary Clinton

“It is thus necessary that the individual should come to realize that his own ego is of no importance in comparison with the existence of his nation…” – Adolph Hitler

“Cause the registration of all firearms on some pretext, with the view of confiscating them and leaving the population defenseless.” –Vladimir Ilich Lenin

“I believe in keeping guns out of our inner cities, and that our leaders must say so in the face of the gun manfuacturer’s lobby.” — Barack Obama

Thought crimes are real and present in our everyday society. “Hate” crimes legislation seeks to punish the thoughts behind crimes that are committed rather than simply to enforce current criminal laws. Murdering someone is cause for the death penalty in most states. Calling it a hate crime to pander to political groups is disingenuous at best, and criminal at worst.

Elected officials need to understand that they have more power than simply passing a law or bill to get things done. True leadership is also about persuading people through your better arguments that you are right. Any law that is passed has the ultimate penalty of death for non-compliance, and that’s something any lawmaker should take very seriously. The Republican party has failed to really appreciate that for the past decade, and we paid the price in 2006. This is more than a petty political argument between parties, because the very anti-statist nature of our country is at steak now.

Techie Republicans Requested

I'm looking for a few people to help me set up the newest Republican website (www.baldeaglereport.com).  Anyone can talk about the issues at talk.baldeaglereport.com, but I'd like a few good Republicans to help get the word out there and keep the conversation going.  Email me at baldeagle@baldeaglereport.com if you're interested in a mutually beneficial situation where you write posts for my website and gain a little exposure.  Having some varied viewpoints would assist me in getting my site out there, as well.

Where's the GOP Nominee?

Can anyone name a solid GOP nominee for President? After 8 years of liberal free-spending from the White House, it might be time to think about a real GOP candidate for once. Unfortunately, it seems that all of the candidates are just plain wrong on at least one major issue or another. We’re not talking about splitting hairs here, these are big issues. Abortion is just fine with Rudy. Romney will pander to any voter block by supporting gay marriage, among other things. You’d have to blame the US for the terror threats against us to truly support Ron Paul (although eliminating the IRS isn’t a bad option). McCain doesn’t even begin to approach any semblance of Conservative thought.

What we need is a Republican revival.

Let’s lay some ground rules:

1) Use common sense.

2) Don’t betray basic party doctrine to try to win votes…jackasses do that.

That’s it. Game on.

President Reagan is often cited by Republican candidates who want to be like him or by many of us who miss the likes of him in the White House, but we need to remember that Reagan wasn’t great because he talked like someone else. He was unique, and charismatic. Reagan typified the patriotic American, and he did so because he just felt it was right. He might have been an actor, but he wasn’t playing Reagan. He was just being himself.

As a Conservative party, it is against our very nature to seek to change. We’re more comfortable with tradition, values, and oftentimes replicating successes of the past. Although we have many lessons to draw upon from the past, it will be a new way of Conservative thinking that pushes us back to victory in 2008 and beyond. This medium of online discussion negates the old era of soundbite politics. The liberal media establishment can no longer act as gatekeepers. Talk radio revolutionized politics in decades past, and Republicans do so well with that medium because you have to hold your own argument, and have something intelligent to say. Emotional rhetoric requires the liberal gatekeeper to give you the best edited soundbite, which only works well on television. The internet will prove to work more favorably for those of us who read between the lines. Discerning Conservatives will once again show great promise.

I laugh at the media establishment that seems to take pleasure in promoting the President’s low approval ratings (29%!). You’d think they truly believe 71% of the American public is a card carrying member of the Democrat party! When a pollster asks me, a Conservative Republican, if I approve of the way President Bush is handling the war in Iraq, or the nation’s direction, and I say “No,” it doesn’t mean he’s not being liberal enough…he’s not being Conservative enough. Put 500,000 troops in Iraq, secure the border with Iran, bomb the hell out of Tehran if they don’t stop threatening to produce nuclear “fuel” (what sense does it make for an oil rich nation to produce nuclear “energy?”…seriously, think that one through). Cut taxes, eliminate the IRS and go with a Fair Tax (it would be a nice change of pace), and don’t be afraid to say “Jesus” every now and then (don’t think we forgot about the “Holiday” Tree). Give Libby a full pardon, and criticize an overzealous news media and a prosecutor out on a witch hunt. Those are the things that would change my “no” to a “yes.”

We stand for self-reliance, independence, patriotic devotion to our nation, traditional family values, and God. That’s our party, and that’s how we roll. Let’s clean up the mess. When 96% of incumbants are successful in re-elections, something is wrong. There should be some real challenges to many of the national (and state) seats for our party, even with a Republican in office.

It’s time to clean house. The primaries are where we will do it.

Game on. Let’s show up this time.

Global Warming, Cooling, etc

Are we warming, or are we cooling?  Seriously.  What's going on here?

In some not-too-distant future world we're going to reach the conclusion that the earth is headed for another ice age.  We'll experience dramatic increases in icebergs, and 3 billion people will potentially freeze to death, leaving the remaining to scavenge for food.  The only thing that will save us is if everyone gets a large truck and an SUV and does their fair share to augment the protective CFC bubble to hold in the sun's radiant heat.

It's just as plausible as global warming, Darwinism, or any other faith-based belief.  We don't use facts here.  We use crazy ideas and appeals to emotion.  If you disagree, you're a 1) bigot, 2) intolerant person, and 3) a racist too.

Democrats Don't Understand Victory

Democrats, under direction by Sen. Reid and House Speaker Pelosi, have released a letter to the President calling the troop surge a failure.   Before all of the MRE’s are unpacked, and the new wave of troops have even had a chance to change their socks and break a sweat in the 120 degree Iraqi climate, Democrats are calling this surge a failure.  What is it about these people that make them want to seek political gain at the expense of national pride?  Oh, that’s right, these are liberals, and national pride doesn’t count…only international perceptions.  Senator Reid and Speaker Pelosi don’t know the first thing about a military operation.  Browsing through their biographies, I don’t see any military background, so I’m left to wonder how they can accurately judge an operation that hasn’t even gotten started yet a “failure.”  Maybe we can let Gen. Petreus chime on in that one first?!

There are only 2 possibilities with Democrats lack of support for the war, our troops, and our nation in a time of war.  Either one, they don’t think we can win, or two, they think we’re going about a war the wrong way.  There’s a pretty horrible 3rd option, but that would suggest they’re rooting for the other guys, and we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.  For option number two to be accurate, we would have to hear some decent and constructive criticism.  There would need to be a solid plan of attack, and an all around better way to go about this war.  Maybe Sen. Reid could sponsor a bill to increase military budgets for personnel, so instead of cutting our forces (like the USAF cut of 40,000 troops), we could double our manpower.  How about a troop surge of 300,000?  How’s that sound?  Maybe 500,000 troops on the ground (see Desert Storm stats for precedence) would enable us to secure the borders, seriously threaten Iran (instead of weakly skirmishing here and there), and quell sectarian violence.    Democrats offer none of these ideas.  Instead we get letters calling the operation a failure, and calls for “redeployment” of troops (this is dem code for ‘retreat’).  Democrats have chosen option number one.  They don’t think we can win.

Democrats don’t think a superpower nation can defeat a bunch of terrorist thugs.

They don’t deserve to lead this nation.  It’s time for Republicans to clean house.  Along with any corrupt officials (like pedophiles who send instant messages to boys) and Republicans in Name Only (the RINOs know who they are..some of them are running for president), the party needs a cleansing.  You win the people over by showing strong conviction on the issues.  It’s as simple as that.

The American people cannot and should not have to wait until later this year for changes in your flawed Iraq policy.  There is an obligation to act now.  That is why we intend to again send you legislation that would limit the U.S. mission in Iraq, begin the phased redeployment of U.S. forces, and bring the war to a responsible end.“  — Speaker Pelosi’s Letter 13 June 2007

This is NOT leadership, and it’s not what America needs to remain a successful superpower nation.  “A responsible end”?  Who is this woman kidding.  Take notice, America, the word victory is nowhere to be found in this letter.

GOP Great in '08

2008 will revolutionize American politics, and the internet will be at the center of it all.  We've already seen how people can think for themselves and be more critical of the typically biased crap that comes out of major news media outlets.  The national guard memo example is just the first crest of a series of larger waves of change.  It's forums like this one at townhall.com that will shape the presidential race.

Read the blogs, post your own, and get the word out on the streets about what conservatism is truly about.  We cannot win the argument by leaning center.  It is only through conviction and strong principles that the great republic can be restored to its great power.

This is the 21st century.

We're a superpower.

Let's act like it.

Gore Was Right..then Wrong

The web, which Al Gore took the initiative in creating apparently, is abuzz with a new video showing then Senator and VP Candidate Al Gore chastising President Bush (41) and former President Reagan for being too soft on Iraq.  You simply have to see it to believe it.  One source is www.rushlimbaugh.com where you can see the youtube linked video.  You have to check it out.

Al Gore warns us against the administration's "dangerous blindness to the murderous ambitions of a despot. "  He further states, among other things that there is "evidence that [Saddam] was not only promoting terrorism, but was also pursuing a NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM...Bush [41] deserves heavy blame for intentionally concealing from the American people the clear nature of Saddam Hussein and his regime...Saddam used poison gas...Iraq is clandestinely procuring nuclear weapons technology through a global network of front companies."

Al Gore Lied to the American People!
He Lied about George Bush's War!
He Lied about what he knew and when he knew it!
He used our warriors for political gain!
Al Gore Lied to the American people!

Yee-ha!

Here's my question to the American people, those who are voting in 2008.  Do you want to vote for a political party or a person that is considered too tough on terror, or do you want the wishy-washy partisan politics playing liberals who are too soft on terror running things?
